Staying out of Jail
Mainly, two things to bear in mind: DO NOT DO ANY KIND OF DRUGS! Dominicans take a dim view of tourists smoking pot or doing any kind of drugs. The jail in POP bears witness to that. Try to avoid the company of the inmates at the jail there. It can be inconvenient and very costly to get out. The second is to avoid getting into accidents while driving. Driving is very dangerous: traffic signals or street signs, such as ONE way signs, are often not obeyed. Stay out of trouble and have someone else do the driving. Think of this: During Semana Santa , or Holy Week in 2008, there were about 50 persons killed and about 300 injuries. The annual trip to the beaches , and rivers, accompanied by large amounts of alcohol, excitement, and frivolity has claimed about the 50 lives. Over 30,000 volunteers wearing orange T-shirts patrolled the roads beaches and highways over the week of Semana Santa.

Lawyers

Hopefully you will not need one; however if you fall in love with the country you might want to buy a house in which to retire or live there for a few months at a time. I thoroughly recommend the Perdomo brothers who live and work in Sosua for all those things connected with REAL ESTATE. Guido is the lawyer and Juan is in real Estate. Guido's number is 809-571-1950 or 809-571-3274. Offices are at PEDRO CLISANTE NO 73 or right on the main street. Guido is helpful to know if you want to buy property, get your friend out of jail, or obtain a Residencia. The mailing address is EPS-C165,BOX 02-5553, Miami ,Florida, 33102.  Above all costs, AVOID doing business with a real estate agent with huge yellow signs and initials of JK.

Another kind of lawyer is one who does evictions from business and houses. NEVER allow a Dominican into your house to live no matter how much is offered for rent. Dominican renters  have great rights over absentee owners of businesses and houses. However, in the event that you must do an eviction through official legal channels, I suggest that you contact the following lawyer in Sosua: Dr. Josue Burgos Rosario, Edif ERICH Hauser right on the main Highway to Cabarete, second floor of the building. His office is on the main highway almost across from the police station and the supermarcado in Sosua. Telephone 809-571-4536. I have found him to be very reliable. His picture is at the top of the photos. He will also look after house purchases and sales, passports, vehicle license changes, etc.

If you are in need of a lawyer in Santo Domingo, the capital, I suggest that you contact Dra. Patricia De la Rosa or someone in that law firm. Pedro A, Lluberes No. 9 SD.
Tel. 829-921-3874
Cell 399-7044.
