Obviously, if you are in an all-inclusive hotel your meals and accommodation are looked after. However if you want to go AIR ONLY to Puerto Plata airport and stay in a local hotel in Charamicos I have this suggestion for you. Stay at VILLA Mar , formerly known as Villa-Almonte but only if you like to learn some Spanish and mix with all the locals. The owner is SABINE ALMONTE. Sabine is a German mid-wife. She speaks English, German, and of course Spanish. tel 809-571-2256 or Cell 809-776-1227 as well. The website is out of Germany and is at www.villa-almonte.de or e-mail, sabine@villamarsosua.com The hotel is about 100 yards from the Charamicos end of the beach. Many Germans go there with their local friends as it is permitted to have Dominicans in your room, something that is NOT permitted in the all-inclusive resorts. Cooking facilities are available in each room. As well, Sabine is a great source of information on food, location of chicken fights, activities and the like. Many persons stay there long term say for a month or so at a time.

For those with some extra cash and who want to be right in the midst of Sosua and right on the beach try to stay at the new SOSUA BAY HOTEL. It is quite the hotel. Check it out with your travel agent or tel 809-571-4000 or e-mail info is at www.starzresorts.com. Reservations can be made at 1-888-790-5264 Check out their web site on Google at Sosua Bay Club as well. Reviews seem to vary greatly, but it does have view and location.

As well, those who want less expense and want to be right in Sosua, you should consider the CASA MARINA BEACH HOTEL. This is the older part of the hotel. The newer section is called the Casa Marina AMHSA HOTEL. I prefer the older section to the large new one; however they will gladly exchange your room if you are not happy. The CM Beach Hotel is right on a small private beach where you can eat breakfast or play volleyball right on the beach. A large pool is there as well. I have stayed there many times and have always been pleased. Go to a travel web site for more information. For those who are into Jewish History, especially that of Sosua, the Synagogue, which is now a museum, is right next door to the hotel.

Those who want to play golf, do not consider staying in Sosua or Charamicos. Rather you should go to Jack Tar Village in Puerta Plata. It is right on the golf course.

For a new experience in hotels, in Sosua, you might try the HOTEL VORAMAR, located just behind the casino in Sosua. It is carefully run by a German, Swiss group mainly for singles but not necessarily so. Rooms and apartments are super clean with hot water and electricity all the time. Apartments have a fridge and gas stove installed so you can make your own meals. The pool on the grounds is carefully maintained as well. Some nice touches are the 24 hour bar with some pretty chicas running it, great coffee and a light buffet in the morning, included in the price. The restaurant is always open too. The tennis courts are in excellent shape, so bring your racquet. The many Germans who go there are very friendly and always want to practice their English if you are Canadian or American. Many Americans were there too, in March of 2008. The main Sosua beach is always accessible with a ride on a Motoconcho for 30 to 50 pesos or about one to 2 dollars Canadian. The peso exchange rate at the Voramar is excellent , 33 to one American dollar in March of 2008, better than in the shops and on the street. The Cabarete beach can also be reached by bus or taxi or you may want to rent a car or motor bike from the hotel itself. Motor bikes or motor cycles can be kept inside the hotel grounds if safety is of concern. The entire grounds are surrounded by a high security fence so that any client will feel completely safe and secure at all times. You may make reservations by calling 1-809-571-3910 from Canada or America and with a 001 -809-571-3910 if calling from Europe. You may also e-mail Henk or Harald at HOTEL@voramar-sosua.com.

A new favorite of mine in Cabarete is the Agualina Hotel. It is first class all the way and a little expensive. However, it is worth the money. It caters to kite flying, all the new rage on the edge of Cabarete. The pool and grounds are very well maintained, and there is a good snack bar on the site. You will have to take a moto concho to the centre of Cabarete for 40 pesos in the day or 80 pesos at night. You may look up their web site easily by going to Google and typing in the name of the hotel. Telephone 809-571-0787 or e-mail info@agualina.com.

Live with a Dominican Family

As a courtesy to those who read this web site , I can offer weekly stays with a very nice family called Portorreal in Sosua. You would be met at the POP Airport, transported to the house and get settled in. Arrangements for a car rental can be made too. All meals would be provided or you can eat out as you see fit. Members of the family or friends of the family would take you out at night to the disco, the casino, or to local restaurants. You would have your own room with a double bed, and you can get really awake in the morning with a cold shower. It is nice to get up to a Santo Domingo coffee made by Antonia, the mother of the house. Your clothes would be washed at the house as well. Juan and Antonia, dad and mom do not speak any English so hopefully, you would learn some Spanish. Let me know if you are interested. merv@epsilonent.com. The weekly cost for 2 persons, per week, starts at only $500.00 CDN.
